Mason County 8th Graders Discover Manufacturing
Over 300 of Mason County’s 8th graders got an early look at local manufacturing businesses in October, thanks to a grant from The Right Place. Students from Mason County Central, Mason County Eastern, and O.J. DeJonge Middle Schools toured at least two area manufacturers, including Haworth/Ludington Components, Change Parts, FloraCraft, UACJ/Whitehall Industries, and Metalworks in Ludington. The goal of the program was to introduce young people to the exciting work done at manufacturing sites in Michigan, while also preparing them to make informed decisions about their college and career paths. During the tours, students saw work being done by human hand, by robotic arm, and by machines that cost more than most homes. They learned fun facts, like the local Haworth plant is a zero-landfill plant, meaning that the materials used there make no waste that can’t be reused locally. Some students also experienced first-hand how processes worked, by participating in the production of furniture legs, seeing their own hands modeled by scanner into a 3-D view on a computer screen, and learning about safety.
